Bank Term Deposit Rates Shifting Back to Traditional Levels

It would seem that after a period of rife competition for deposits, resulting in exceptional rates of return, the banks are looking to return interest rates to "normal" levels.
The margin between the RBA cash rate and term deposit rates were seemingly at unsustainable levels through late 2009 and early 2010. With wholesale funding getting cheaper the bubble had to burst and recent rate drops would signal that the banks want their margins back. Westpac led the way (Commonwealth and NAB matching rates at times) with a 12 month rate of 6.80% which has now come down to 6.0% and a 5 year term of 8.0%, now down to 7.05%.
Despite such drops, interest rates on term deposits still look attractive from an investment perspective. A virtually riskfree return of over 7.0% paid annually is nothing to sneeze at for the conservative investor. Those with SMSF and retirees with their assets in cash should still be quite content with whats on offer. As always shopping around for term deposit rates is a wise move with most branches having some discrection on rates. Additionally the smaller banks, credit unions and building societies often offer a premium on term deposits in order to attract funds for lending (investors must keep in mind that the gaurantee on term deposits wont last forever, making smaller banks a slightly higher risk investment).
Reading between the lines one could be led to believe that after taking a large percentage of the home loan market share through 08 and 09, CBA and Westpac have bolstered their books by attracting term deposits and are now looking to add more wholesale funding to the mix as the costs slowly come down. With such large market share between the two banks it would make sense to now look to increase their margins and look to book large profits going forward. Such moves would appear to be somewhat of a coup for both banks having actively pursued the homeloan market when times were tough.
It should be very interesting to watch the performance of all banks going forward and in particular CBA and WBC as they look to capitalise on their increased market share.

Fascinating post! Especially to be reading nearly a year down the track.
It is interesting to see how bank profits have jumped significantly - many of them have doubled. It's also interesting that if competition exists between the banks, it is for deposit accounts rather than home loans. I guess it makes sense to compete to have money in your account rather than out - safer risk :)
