Ups and Downs for Nido in the Philippines

It's been a while since I wrote an update on the fortunes of Nido Petroleum (NDO-ASX) in the Philippines, after last discussing their issues at Tindalo. The rough seas (pardon the pun) have continued, with a weather induced shut down of Galoc, further issues at Tindalo, after the much anticipated work over and unfortunately for shareholders, a request for more funds in the way of a capital raising. On the upside, depending on how you look at it, Nido managed to finalise the farm out deal for Gindara that has been touted for many a months now, with Shell Philippines Company (a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell).
Nido's crucial cash flow provider, Galoc, was shut down due to typhoons in the area for a period near to a month. Although no surprise to many, given the seasonal weather patterns that go hand in hand with the region, the shut down could not have come at a worse time from a cash perspective. Ongoing issues at Tindalo have put serious cash flow pressure on all JV holders (Kairiki Energy, TG World, Nido Petroleum), with Kairiki and Nido both putting hands out to investors for more cash. On a positive note, the Galoc JV were able to perform maintenance during the downtime and reconnection/production is now back online without issue.
Tindalo has continued to be Nido's proverbial thorn in the side with water production issues continuing after the work over and acid stimulations. Since announcing the issues, Nido have separated the well into four zones with swell packers, in order to test the zones individually for the water production issues. Doing so allows the JV to not only adequately find the source of the water, but also shut the associated zone off and produce from others.
On Thursday 23rd December, having yet again run late on projected time lines, Nido's management team announced that the fourth zone has been determined to be the zone associated with the water formation and as such has been shut off. Zones 1, 2 and 3 will now be flowed in conjunction and further testing is required in order to ascertain oil flow rates and whether water production issues still exists. Some 46 000 barrels of completion fluid were pumped during the work over of which only 14% has been recovered since testing. It would appear shareholders patience is set for further testing regarding the fortunes of the Tindalo well. Further news is due “once there is a material finding”.
Nido Petroleum and Kairiki Energy's Gindara prospect made its biggest leap towards first drilling with the farm out agreement with Shell. Under the terms of the deal, Shell will acquire 45% of SC54B with Nido contributing 27% and Kairiki 18% respectively. Shell will contribute 75% of drilling costs of Gindara-1 up to a maximum of $24m, pay US$2.5m in past associated costs, and pay pro-rata further costs for 2010 and 2011. Whether the deal favours Nido (and Kairiki for that matter) could certainly be argued given the terms of the deal, but certainly the deal puts the JV a lot closer to drilling Gindara-1 than our last coverage. Nido remains operator with 33%, Shell 45% and Kairiki the remaining 22%. Given recent issues at Tindalo, some concerns remain whether they will be up to the task, especially moving into the deeper water for the Gindara target. Drilling is set for the first half of 2011 adding plenty of speculative upside for the coming 6 months.
Shareholders (we sold out after the initial poor result of the Tindalo work over) are set for more interesting times with no firm results yet from Tindalo and exact timing of Gindara not finalised. Nido is certainly remaining on our radar with plenty of potential upside should Tindalo issues be resolved and Gindara drilling prove successful. Looking further ahead, SC-58 is shaping up as another find with recent sea bed coring showing some potential. Risks still remain, but we still see Nido Petroleum as an energy play worth keeping on your watch list.
